What to tell the stone yard

Give them the dimensions rather than the weight. They are looking at a field of rock and picking one that matches, so a size is something they can walk up to. The weight is what tells you whether it can get where you want it.

Skid steer, standard frame and up. Forks and a strap. The tipping point is the front axle. Worth knowing: that is a working figure for a stone slung on a chain, so the machine’s own plate will read closer to 4,000 lb. Rated capacity assumes a tidy load tucked against the machine, and a boulder swinging at full reach is not that.
How much of it you’ll actually see
Bury it a third deep, which is what stops it looking dropped, and about 1.3 ft of height stays above grade. So if you want a boulder that reads two feet tall in the bed, you need to buy one nearer three.

What is a landscape boulder?

Trade-wise it’s any stone too heavy for one person to carry, which starts somewhere near 200 lb and has no ceiling at all. Below that a yard calls it a rock and sells it off a pallet. Above it, the stone gets handled by machine and priced on its own. That is the only real line between rock boulders for landscaping and the loose stone sold by the yard beside them.

Here’s the part that catches people out. A boulder isn’t quarried to a shape. So two stones with identical measurements can differ by hundreds of pounds, depending on how much of that measured box the rock actually fills. Weight has to be estimated from dimensions. And the estimate needs a shape allowance in it, or the answer comes out badly high.

Where does the stone come from? Not a factory. Boulders get gathered rather than made. They come out of road cuts, off weathered hillsides, or up behind a plow. Nobody sizes them and nobody grades them. So a yard’s inventory is whatever the ground handed over that month, tipped into rough piles by how big it is. That is why two suppliers can quote you the same stone and mean completely different rocks.

Calculate boulder weight from dimensions

Three measurements and a density. That’s the whole method, and it works on anything from a doorstep rock up to the ones that arrive on their own truck. Take the widest point across the stone, the widest point the other way, and the height. Then treat those three as a box the boulder would just fit inside. Most boulders for landscaping measure somewhere between 18 in and 4 ft along their longest face.

Now knock it back, because the rock doesn’t fill that box. An ordinary lumpy boulder occupies about 65% of it. A blocky quarried piece with flat faces gets closer to 80%. Something river-rounded and egg-shaped is nearer 52%, which is the true figure for an ellipsoid and the reason smooth stones feel lighter than they look.

Then multiply by the density of the stone. Granite runs 165 lb a cubic foot, sandstone 145, basalt 180. Put together:

Length × width × height × shape factor × lb per cubic foot = weight.

So a granite stone 3 ft by 2.5 ft by 2 ft is 15 cubic feet of box, 9.8 cubic feet of actual rock, and about 1,609 lb. Most people assume half a ton, and they’re not far off. Where guessing falls apart is at the top end. Double every dimension and the weight goes up eight times, not two.

Weight by stone type, from sandstone up to basalt

Same size, different rock, and you can be 300 lb apart. Sandstone is the lightest thing on the list at 145 lb a cubic foot. Basalt is the heaviest at 180, a difference of about a quarter. On a small stone that’s neither here nor there. On a 5 ft feature boulder it’s over 1,000 lb. And 1,000 lb is the difference between two machines.

The size columns are the rough footprint people shop by, worked at the ordinary irregular shape. A 2 ft stone is the one you can move with help. A 3 ft stone needs a machine and lands around 1,609 lb in granite. By 5 ft you’re over three tons, and at that point delivery, access and placement cost more than the rock.

Within each of those rows sits a range of looks. Granite boulders are the default across most of the country, and they come in more colors than people expect. Pink granite boulders, red, blue, black granite boulders and near-white all get quarried and sold under exactly those names. Limestone boulders run pale buff through grey. Weathered limestone boulders are the pitted kind, with holes worn clean through, and they cost more because that surface took centuries. Moss rock boulders are simply whatever local stone has sat out long enough to grow lichen on one face. So ask which face that is before it gets set, because only one side of the stone has it.

Read down a column instead of across a row. The pattern shows up straight away. Your choice of stone moves the weight by maybe 20%. Your choice of size moves it by 1,000%. So pick the look you want first. Density only decides which end of your equipment’s range you land in.

Can your equipment lift it?

This is the question the whole tool exists for, and there’s a trap in it. Every machine has a rated capacity on a plate. But that rating assumes a tidy load sitting in a bucket, tucked in close. A boulder is the opposite of that. It hangs off a chain. It swings. And it sits right out at the end of the arm, where the reach works against you.

So halve the plate. The figures below are already halved, which is why they look conservative next to a spec sheet.

A standard skid steer is the machine most people end up renting, and it handles about 2,000 lb of rock. That covers a 3 ft stone comfortably and a 4 ft one not at all. A mini excavator takes less weight, at 1,500 lb. But it places to the inch and reaches over a fence, which often matters more than the raw figure.

Two habits worth having. Keep the load low and close when you’re moving, because height is what tips a machine. And never stand between a suspended boulder and anything solid. Chains fail, straps roll off, and rock doesn’t give you a warning first.

How boulders are sold and priced, by the ton and by the piece

Two systems, and quotes from them aren’t comparable. Bulk yards load the truck, weigh it and bill the tonnage. Garden centers and specialty suppliers price each stone on its own, because a good-looking boulder is worth more than the same weight of dull one. So boulders for landscaping pricing reaches you two different ways. Ask which one you’re being given before you compare anything.

Per-ton wins when you want several stones and you’re not fussy about any single one. Per-piece wins when you want one specimen for a front entrance and you’d like to choose it yourself. Most people ordering three or four boulders for a bed are better off per piece, oddly, because a ton buys fewer stones than they expect.

A one-man rock is genuinely one person’s job. A two-man rock has not been lifted by two people in about fifty years. Nobody expects you to try. But the names stuck, because they sort a pile faster than a weight range does. So a yard telling you they have “three-man stone on the ground” means roughly 1,500 lb apiece.

What landscape boulders cost

Reckon on $100 to $600 a ton delivered, and where you land inside that is mostly about the rock rather than the size. Ordinary fieldstone cleared off a farm is cheap wherever farms are. Moss rock, with lichen already grown onto the face, is priced for a surface that took decades to appear and can run double. So the cost of landscape boulders is really a question about which quarry is nearest you, not about how heavy the stone is.

The third column is the useful one, because it turns a per-ton rate into the thing you’re actually buying. A 3 ft granite boulder is about 1,609 lb, so roughly 0.8 of a ton, which lands near $201 of stone. The same stone in moss rock costs noticeably more for no extra rock at all.

A landscape boulders price list will usually quote per ton and stop there, so the extras are on you to ask about. Delivery is $75 to $250 a trip and it’s charged whether the truck brings one boulder or nine, so order together. Machine time to set them runs $100 to $200 an hour with an operator. On a small job that side of the bill is often bigger than the rock, and it’s the part people forget to ask about.

Choosing boulder size for your yard, and how deep to bury it

Most garden boulders end up too small for the space they go in. Here’s why. You pick them standing in a stone yard, out in the open, next to a pile of much bigger rock. They look enormous there. Then they arrive at a bed beside a two-story house, and they read as garden ornaments.

A rough scale check. Measure from the ground to the window sill. For a bed against a house, the main stone wants to be at least a third of that. In an open lawn, bigger again, since there’s nothing around it to borrow scale from. One genuinely large stone beats five medium ones almost every time. Large landscaping boulders also cost less per ton, and they still look like more money.

Landscaping with big boulders has a second advantage nobody mentions. A stone that size only gets placed once. Nothing short of a machine will ever move it again. So landscaping with large boulders is a decision you make properly at the start, or live with.

That doesn’t mean everything has to be huge. Small boulders for landscaping earn their place at the front of a bed. Tuck one against the big stone to break its outline and tie it to the ground. What fails is a row of identical medium stones. Using boulders in landscaping works on contrast, so pick one hero, add two supporting players, and stop there.

Then bury about 33% of the height. This is the single thing that separates a placed boulder from a dropped one, and it costs nothing but digging. A stone sitting on the surface shows a ring of soil and shadow at its base and the eye picks that up immediately. Sunk in, the ground appears to run up to it. It also stops the thing rocking, which matters if children are going to climb on it.

Buy accordingly. Want a boulder that reads 2 ft tall in the bed? You need one about 3 ft tall, which weighs roughly 1,609 lb rather than the 644 lb you might have budgeted for. Group them in odd numbers, vary the sizes, set them at different angles, and let the biggest one sit deepest. Landscaping with boulders on a slope has one extra rule: tip each stone back into the hill slightly. It looks stable because it is, and it stops water running underneath and undercutting the base.

Fake and faux landscaping boulders, and when they make sense

There’s a whole category of hollow boulders molded from resin or fiberglass. You’ll see them listed as artificial boulders for landscaping, artificial landscape boulders, faux landscape boulders, fake boulders for landscaping or fake garden boulders. They’re all the same product under different words. And they exist for one job in particular: hiding things. Well heads, septic risers, utility boxes, irrigation valves. A real stone over a well cover would need lifting every time somebody services it, and at 1,609 lb that’s a non-starter.

A faux equivalent weighs 15 to 40 lb. One person tips it aside, the work gets done, and it goes back. They cost $60 to $250 depending on size. That’s usually more than a real rock of the same footprint. And you’re paying for the hollow rather than in spite of it.

Two honest drawbacks. Up close they read as plastic, and the shine gets worse after a few seasons of sun. So keep them off the path edge. Set back in a planting, where foliage breaks up the outline, they pass fine. And they blow around. Anything hollow needs staking or a couple of real rocks tucked at the base, or you’ll be retrieving it from a neighbor’s yard after the first storm. For anywhere you’re not covering access to something, real stone is cheaper and looks better.

Delivery and placement: getting the stone from the truck to the spot

Work this out before you order, not after. It’s the stage that turns a $300 boulder into a $1,200 afternoon, and it’s entirely predictable if anyone thinks about it in advance. Getting landscape boulders delivered is easy. Getting them into the back yard is the part that costs.

Start by measuring the narrowest gap between the road and where the stone is going. A skid steer needs about 6 ft of clear width. A mini excavator gets by on nearer 4. So a gate post or an air conditioner in the way picks the machine for you. Then look at what’s overhead. Low branches and power lines rule out the tall equipment, however wide the side yard is.

Ask whether the supplier runs a knuckle-boom truck. It has a crane on the bed. So it sets each stone as it unloads, and it can reach 20 ft or more past the curb. No second machine ever comes to site. Where it reaches, that’s far and away the cheapest way to do this.

Protect the ground you cross. Plywood sheets over lawn spread the load and save you re-seeding two ruts in the spring. Avoid moving stone across wet ground entirely if you can wait a few days, because a loaded machine on soft turf leaves damage that lasts a season. And have the hole dug before the boulder arrives. Setting it once is quick. Setting it, lifting it back out and setting it again is how the hourly rate gets away from you.

For anything under 200 lb, a heavy-duty hand truck and a plank ramp does it. Bigger than that, drag it on a sheet of plywood or an old truck bed liner, which slides on grass far better than the stone does. Strap it, don’t balance it, and go slowly across any slope.
