Calories Burned Mowing a Lawn Calculator

Most tools open by asking how many minutes you mowed, which nobody actually knows. This one works out the calories burned mowing a lawn from the size of it instead, converts that into a duration for your machine, and tells you how far you walked behind the mower to get it done.

From the size of your lawn

What you know
You, and the job

A lawn that size takes about 45 min of actual cutting on this machine, plus 16 min of trimming that burns at a different rate.

What you were pushing

Self-propelled or push, engine driving the blade.

Deck width optional

Used to work out how far you walked. A narrower deck means more passes and more ground covered on foot for the same lawn.

In plain terms

325 calories in 45 min with a walk-behind power mower, walking 1.2 miles

That is 7.1 calories a minute, and 30% of the 150 minutes of moderate activity a week the physical activity guidelines ask for. The walking alone is 1.2 miles.

How far you actually walked
A 21 in deck covers the lawn one strip at a time, so 10,890 sq ft is 6,223 ft of walking, or 1.18 miles. That ignores turns and overlap, both of which add to it.
Why the mower type matters this much
Walk-behind power mower is rated at 5 METs against 2.5 for a rider, so the same lawn on a riding mower burns 162 calories rather than 325. One MET is roughly what you burn sitting still.
How this is worked out
5 METs × 3.5 × 81.6 kg ÷ 200 = 7.14 kcal/min × 45 min = 325 kcal

Calculate calories burned mowing

Calorie burn depends on three things: how hard the activity is, how much you weigh and how long you do it. The standard way to combine them is the MET, a multiple of the energy you use sitting still. Mowing behind a power mower is 5 METs, so it costs five times what sitting does.

The arithmetic is METs × 3.5 × your weight in kilograms ÷ 200, which gives calories per minute. For someone at 180 lb, or 81.6 kg, that is 7.1 calories a minute behind a walk-behind mower. A quarter acre takes about 45 min of cutting, so the session comes to 325 calories.

Body weight scales the result directly. At 250 lb the same lawn burns 451 calories and at 130 lb it burns 235, which is nearly double across a normal range of adults. Any calculator that doesn’t ask your weight is giving you somebody else’s number.

Push mower vs riding mower

This is the single biggest variable, and it is not close. Walking behind a mower is moderate exercise. Sitting on one is not exercise at all.

MET values by mower type
MachineMETsCal/hr at 180 lbWhat it compares to
Reel or push mower6514No engine drive, so you are providing the power as well as the steering
Walk-behind power mower5429Self-propelled or push, engine driving the blade
Riding mower2.5214Roughly the same as driving a car with some vibration
Zero-turn2.5214Seated work, so the figure is close to sitting still

A riding mower at 2.5 METs burns 214 calories an hour, against 514 for a reel mower you push yourself. That is a factor of nearly two and a half for exactly the same lawn and the same finished result.

There is a real trade here. A rider turns an acre from a 4 hr job into well under an hour, and that time has value. But if part of why you mow your own grass is the exercise, the machine choice matters more than anything else on this page.

Self-propelled sits in the same MET band as a push mower, which surprises people. The engine drives the wheels but you still walk every foot of the lawn, and walking is where the energy goes. The only machine that changes the answer is one you sit on.

Calories by body weight and time

Calories scale with both weight and minutes, so the table below covers the range most people land in. Find your weight on the left and read across to the time you spent behind a walk-behind power mower.

Calories burned at 5 METs, walk-behind power mower
Body weight30 min45 min1 hr2 hr
130 lb155232310619
150 lb179268357714
180 lb214321429857
200 lb238357476953
250 lb2984475951,191

Every row is a straight multiple of the one above it, because the formula is linear in both weight and time. That’s a limitation worth knowing: it means the figure takes no account of fitness. Two people of the same weight get the same answer even if one is out of breath and the other is not.

Use it as a planning number rather than a precise one. If you want accuracy, wear a monitor and compare it against the estimate here once, then adjust everything afterwards by the difference you found.

How far you walk behind a mower

The distance is set by your deck width, because you cover the lawn one strip at a time. Divide the area by the cutting width and you have the ground you covered on foot. A 21 in deck is 1.75 ft wide, so a quarter acre is 6,223 ft, or 1.2 miles.

Distance walked by lawn size and deck width
LawnArea21" deck30" deck
Small city lot5,000 sq ft0.5 mi0.4 mi
Quarter acre10,890 sq ft1.2 mi0.8 mi
Half acre21,780 sq ft2.4 mi1.7 mi
One acre43,560 sq ft4.7 mi3.3 mi

An acre behind a standard 21 in mower is 4.7 miles of walking, and that is before turns, overlap and going back over missed strips. Twelve miles of pushing, which is a search people genuinely make, works out at about 2.5 acres of grass and roughly 3,306 calories.

A wider deck cuts the distance proportionally, which is why the 30 in column is nearly a third shorter. It also cuts the time. What it doesn’t cut is the effort per step, so the calories per mile stay about the same.

MET values for yard work

METs come from the Compendium of Physical Activities, a published reference that assigns an energy cost to hundreds of activities. One MET is your resting rate, so a 5 MET activity uses five times as much energy as sitting quietly.

Published MET values for common yard tasks
TaskMETsCal/hr at 180 lb
Mowing, walk-behind power5429
Raking the lawn3.8326
Bagging grass and leaves4343
Weeding and cultivating3.5300
Trimming shrubs, power3.5300
Digging and spading5429
Watering the lawn1.5129

Mowing and digging sit at the top of the domestic list, and watering sits at the bottom at 1.5 METs, which is barely above standing. Raking is closer to mowing than most people assume, at 3.8, which makes autumn leaf clearing a genuinely useful session.

Anything at 3 METs or above counts as moderate intensity. That is the threshold the activity guidelines use, and it puts every task on this list except watering into the category that counts toward a weekly total.

How mowing fits a weekly activity target

The US physical activity guidelines ask for 150 minutes of moderate activity a week. Walk-behind mowing qualifies, so a single cut does real work toward it.

A quarter acre at 45 min of cutting is 30% of the weekly target from one session, and adding the trimming and edging pushes it higher. Mow a half acre weekly and you are most of the way there on yard work alone.

The catch is that the season is short. Twenty-eight cuts a year covers roughly half the weeks, so mowing can be a useful contribution rather than a plan. It also stops entirely in winter, which is precisely when the rest of the routine tends to fall apart too.

It counts for more if you skip the rider. A season of walk-behind cuts on a half acre is a meaningful block of moderate activity; the same season on a lawn tractor is closer to sitting in traffic. That is worth weighing against the hours a rider gives back, because both sides of that trade are real.

Mowing calorie questions

How many calories does mowing a lawn burn?

About 325 calories for a quarter-acre lawn behind a walk-behind power mower, if you weigh 180 lb. That works out at roughly 7.1 calories a minute. Heavier people burn proportionally more, and a riding mower cuts it to about 162.

How many calories do you burn cutting grass?

Between 200 and 500 an hour for most people with a walk-behind mower, scaling directly with body weight. The published MET value is 5 for a power mower and 6 for a reel mower you push yourself, against 2.5 for riding.

How many calories do you burn push mowing?

A reel or push mower rates 6 METs, which for a 180 lb person is about 514 calories an hour. Mowing a full acre that way takes roughly 4 hr of cutting and burns around 2,057 calories.

How many calories do I burn mowing the lawn with a riding mower?

Far fewer than you would hope. A riding mower is 2.5 METs, barely above sitting still, so the same quarter acre burns about 162 calories against 325 walking. The exercise is in the walking, not the mowing.

How many calories are burned pushing a lawn mower 12 miles?

Around 3,306 calories at 180 lb. Twelve miles behind a 21 in deck means cutting about 2.5 acres, which is 7 hr 43 min of mowing. Most people cover that over several weeks rather than in one session.

How far do you walk mowing a lawn?

A quarter acre with a 21 in deck is about 1.2 miles, and a full acre is roughly 4.7 miles. Divide the area in square feet by the deck width in feet to get the distance, then add a bit for turns and overlap.

Does mowing count as exercise?

Walk-behind mowing does. At 5 METs it sits in the moderate-intensity band alongside brisk walking, so it counts toward the 150 weekly minutes the physical activity guidelines recommend. Riding mowers do not reach that threshold.

Do you burn more calories with a heavier mower?

Slightly, but less than you would think. MET values are set by the activity rather than the equipment weight, and the published figures already assume a normal domestic machine. Pushing uphill or through long grass makes a far bigger difference than the mower itself.
