Why the grade matters more than the pile
Stone is sold by the ton and planned by the square foot, and every grade weighs something different in between. Crusher run and pea gravel are hundreds of pounds apart per cubic yard. So a calculator that uses one average figure will get your tonnage wrong, and on a driveway it will get it wrong by a ton or more.
Each of these applies the density of the specific stone you picked. Shape matters too: angular stone locks together and holds a slope, while rounded stone rolls under a tire and works its way downhill.
