Sand is a word, not a material
Ask for sand and the next question is always which one. Masonry, concrete, paver, play, fill: they differ in grain size, in whether they have been washed, and in whether the grains are angular or rounded. That last one decides whether a surface locks together or shifts under load.
They also differ in weight, and sand is the heaviest thing most people will ever have delivered to a house. A single cubic yard is more than a half-ton pickup should legally carry, which is why the tonnage matters as much as the price.
