Mulch Calculators by the Bale, the Yard and the Dollar

Mulch is sold by the bale, the bag and the cubic yard depending on what it is, so the unit changes before the arithmetic does. These work out the volume first, then convert it into whatever your supplier actually quotes in.

One of these rots on purpose. The other never will

Mulch splits into two jobs that look identical from the street. Bark, straw and wood chips break down, and that is the point of them: they feed the soil while they cover it, which is why a bed gets topped up every spring. Rubber does not break down at all, so it holds its depth for a decade and gives the ground nothing.

That decides where each one belongs. Anything growing wants the organic kind. A play surface or a permanent border wants the one that stays put. Buying on price alone gets it backwards, because the cheap option is the one you buy again every year.
