How Much Does Mulch Cost? Bulk, Bagged and Installed
The mulch is the cheap part. Moving it is not, and that is the whole story of a landscaping quote. So how much is a yard of mulch? Hardwood is $30 to $50 in bulk. Spreading it adds $25 to $65 a yard on top. Those two lines stay apart on this page, because an installed price hides which one is high.

Why an installed quote looks so high
Mulch is cheap and moving it is not. A yard of hardwood costs about $40. The labour to barrow it round the back and spread it costs roughly $45, which is close to the same again.
That ratio is unusual. On most materials on this site the stuff is the expensive part and labour is a fraction. With mulch it is nearly even, and on a small job with poor access the labour is the larger half.
Which is why a mulch quote can look wrong when it is not. Somebody quoting $380 for four yards is not overcharging on the mulch. They are charging $180 to move it, and that is the number worth negotiating or removing.
Mulch cost per cubic yard
$30 to $150 depending entirely on what it is. Basic hardwood sits at the bottom, rubber at the top, and everything else falls between.

Coverage does not change with type, which surprises people. A cubic yard is a cubic yard, so it covers 108 sq ft at three inches whatever is in it. The price per yard changes; the ground it covers does not.
Those are collected prices. Turn up with a trailer and that is what you pay. Every figure below adds something to it.
Bulk mulch prices also move with the season. Yards discount hard in late summer to clear stock, and charge most in April when every garden in the country wants mulching at once. On a large order that swing is worth more than shopping around.
Cost by mulch type
The spread across the woods is about two to one, and most of it is scarcity rather than quality. Cedar and cypress cost more because there is less of them, not because they cover better.
Dyed mulch is the interesting one. It is hardwood with pigment, so it costs $5 to $10 more a yard for a colour that lasts about a season longer before it greys. Whether that is worth it depends on how much the fading bothers you.
Rubber is a different purchase entirely at $80 to $150. It costs three times as much and then stops costing anything, because it does not rot and never needs topping up. Over ten years it works out cheaper. In year one it does not.
Where the money is genuinely wasted is buying cedar for a bed nobody looks at. Basic hardwood does the same job for the plants, and the difference across a big garden runs to hundreds.
Bagged vs bulk: the break-even point
Bags are $4 to $6 for 2 cu ft, and it takes 14 of them to make a cubic yard. So bagged is around $67 a yard against $40 in bulk.
That is much closer than the same comparison for soil or stone, because mulch bags are big and mulch is light. Bagged mulch is a genuine option here in a way bagged topsoil never is.

The crossover sits between one and two yards, and it moves with the delivery fee. A yard charging $120 a trip pushes it further out. One charging $40 brings it in.
There is a handling limit too. Two yards is 27 bags, which is a car load several times over and a lot of plastic to dispose of. Most people switch to bulk before the arithmetic strictly says to.

One yard delivered works out at $80 a yard. 12 yards works out at $43. The mulch never changed price.
Mulch yards tend to be more relaxed about minimums than stone or soil suppliers, because the stuff is light and easy to load. Many will do one yard without a surcharge, which is worth asking before you commit to bags.
Installation and spreading cost
Mulch installation cost runs $25 to $65 a cubic yard for the labour alone, on top of everything above. Full installed pricing lands between $60 and $140 a yard once material, delivery and spreading are added together.

Spreading is roughly a third to a half of every row. That is the line to look at first when a quote seems high, and the only one you can delete entirely by doing it yourself.
What moves it is access rather than area. A bed the barrow can reach is quick. A back garden through a side gate, or anything up steps, can double the labour on the same quantity of mulch.
Blown mulch is worth asking about on bigger jobs. A truck with a hose does in an hour what a crew does in a morning, and on several yards it often comes in under hand spreading despite the equipment.

Most homeowners land in the first two rows and pay somewhere between $77 and $237 depending on who does the work. That is the honest answer to what mulching a garden costs.
